How Will AI Reshape the UK Job Market? Essential Insights for Career Guidance Professionals

As career development professionals, we find ourselves at the forefront of a rapidly evolving job market, reshaped by the advent of artificial intelligence (AI). A recent study by ServiceNow has shed light on the profound changes we can expect in the UK job landscape by 2028, presenting both challenges and opportunities for our field. For example, the ServiceNow study projects the creation of 610,000 new AI-related roles in the UK by 2028. This substantial growth, however, is not uniformly distributed across all sectors which predicts growth sectors will include Education and Health Care and sectors such as Financial Services declining.

One of the interesting focuses of the ServiceNow study is its commentary around in demand skills. As career guidance professionals, it’s crucial that we understand and communicate the skills that will be most valued in this AI-driven job market. The study underscores the critical need for upskilling in AI, particularly in:

  • Computer and information system management
  • Software development
  • Data engineering competencies

Given these changes how are we adapting to such changes at Sonder Training Group? Well, we recognise the importance to evolve our Level 6 Career Guidance and Development Diploma qualification in response to these AI-driven changes. Some of the changes we are now implementing into our curriculum include:

  1. Our course materials take AI into account, and we encourage and promote AI literacy especially in the effective use of careers related information.
  2. When using AI for LMI, we corroborate and verify the sources used for reliability, safety and accuracy.  We ensure that, as trainers and practitioners, we acknowledge the use of AI and recognise its limitations. We encourage our learners to develop their programming skills in AI.
  3. Data-Driven Decision Making: We’ve enhanced our training on using data analytics in career guidance, reflecting the increasing importance of data skills across industries. We encourage our learners to develop their critical analysis of the use of data and how this influences decision making e.g. the social, personal and economic benefits of career guidance and development.
  4. Ethical Considerations in AI: Our course now includes discussions on the ethical implications of AI in the workplace, preparing professionals to address clients’ concerns about AI integration.
  5. The CDI Code of Ethics underpins our training and it’s a recurring theme through the qualification, we encourage our learners to debate this issue, and to be reflective practitioners in their use of AI and its application.
